Gellir olrhain Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru yn ôl i 1176 pryd y dywedir i’r Eisteddfod gyntaf gael ei chynnal dan nawdd yr Arglwydd Rhys, yn ei gastell yn Aberteifi.  Croesawodd gynulliad mawr, gan wahodd beirdd a cherddorion o bob rhan o’r wlad.

The National Eisteddfod of Wales can be traced back to 1176 when it is said that the first Eisteddfod was held, under the auspices of Lord Rhys, at his castle in Cardigan. He held a grand gathering, inviting poets and musicians from all over the country.

Traditional robes and regalia

Dyfarnwyd cadair i’r bardd a’r cerddorion gorau wrth fwrdd yr Arglwydd.  Cadwyd y traddodiad hwn mewn eisteddfodau cyfoes.  Er 1880 cynhaliwyd yr Eisteddfod bob blwyddyn rhwng de a gogledd Cymru bob yn ail.

The best poet and musicians were awarded a chair at the Lord’s table. This tradition is still kept at the modern day Eisteddfodau. Since 1880 the Eisteddfod has been staged annually alternating between North and South Wales.
